Position: Communications Intern
Location: Lilongwe, Malawi
Communication lies at the heart of every company and effective communication is an integral part of strategic management. This internship is required to raise awareness and enhance the profile of Wala Ltd by strengthening our ability to communicate our core business, projects and impact.
The communications intern will assist Wala with communications within and outside the company. An Ideal candidate will be energetic, inventive and hardworking. You should be social media, technology and web-savvy – brimming with ideas about creative ways to engage audiences in line with the company’s vision and mission. While assisting with a wide range of projects, the communication intern will gain hands-on experience and training in many aspects of marketing and development, while also gaining a good understanding of work in a local social enterprise.
Overall Tasks
- Assist with the development and implementation of the company’s strategic plan for communications.
- Be point person on tasks related to implementing the strategic development and communications plan.
- Lead activities to capture the impact of Wala’s work.
- Manage and provide regular reports on Wala’s communications platforms.
- Assisting staff with tracking, formatting and archiving reviews and other media.
- Proactively pitch story ideas, public relations opportunities, and fresh content/concepts to further engage communications channels.
- Create, maintain and update Wala’s social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+, etc.).
- Assist in the production and promotion of newsletters, advertisements, press releases, and promotional materials.
- Assist staff with promoting events.
- Enjoy staying on top of current events and researching industry trends so that you can incorporate it into your work.
- Act as a liaison across all departments to ensure information is communicated accurately and through the appropriate channels.
- Perform any other reasonable and communication related tasks assigned from time-to-time.
Professional and Academic Background/Expertise:
Education:
Applicants at the time of application must meet the following requirements:
- Be enrolled currently in or have graduated recently with a university (degree in journalism & media, communications, PR, Marketing or equivalent) from a recognized higher learning institution. If a candidate has not graduated a transcript of grades will be sufficient.
- Fluent in written and spoken English and Chichewa. Knowledge of other local languages will be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of communications tools.
- Experience with social media for developing communications, marketing and promotion strategies a plus.

Above the technical competences, we are looking for a driven, long-term sighted individual who has an authentic interest in contributing to Malawi’s socio-economic development and is willing to grow within a multicultural, dynamic and innovative organisation.
The successful candidate will be expected to start work immediately and is expected to be willing to make a commitment to work 30-40 hours per week for at least twelve (12) months.
